How To Reset Rheem Water Heater [Electric Tank Style Units]
I’ll talk about all the essential things you need to know to reset a Rheem electric water heater in this section.
Why Do You Need The Rheem Electric Water Heater Reset Button?
The first question that may come to your mind is whether there is even a reset button in Rheem electric heaters. The answer is yes. All Rheem electric heaters have a reset button. But why do you need it?
You’d be using it most often when there’s no hot water. There’s a safety device called the ECO that cuts off power to the heater when the water temperature becomes too high.
If this safety mechanism wasn’t in place, the water would be too hot and the users would suffer severe burns. When the ECO gets tripped, the heater will stop heating the water for good. You’d have to reset the heater to restore the power to it.
Whenever you press the reset button, you’re essentially “untripping” the ECO. A thunderstorm or a power surge can also make the ECO trip.
That’s why the reset button is in place. You can easily restore power to the heater and continue normal operation in those circumstances by resetting the heater. But keep in mind that it’s not okay for the ECO to keep on tripping.
If it trips multiple times, that’s an issue you can’t ignore. You need to find the underlying reason behind it and take steps to solve it. I have a dedicated section on this topic. So, you can scroll down to it if you’re facing this issue.
Where Is Rheem Electric Water Heater Reset Button Located?
Many people make the mistake of looking for the reset button outside the water heater. But you won’t find the reset button as you’d have to do a little work to access it. The reset button is located above the upper heating element in most electric water heaters including Rheem.
It’s usually embedded into the upper thermostat. Most reset buttons are of bright red color so that they’re easy to detect. You’d have to remove the upper element access cover and the insulation to access the reset button.
Keep in mind that you won’t find a reset button in Rheem gas and tankless water heaters. But I’ll talk about how you can reset them later on in this guide. If you own a gas or tankless unit, scroll to that section.
How To Reset Rheem Electric Water Heater?
The process of resetting a Rheem electric heater is incredibly easy. No matter which model of the heater you’re using, the process is the same. So, the reset procedure is the same in the Rheem performance platinum models, Rheem gladiator models, and the Rheem classic series standard electric units.
So, how to reset the ECO on a Rheem water heater? It all boils down to locating the reset button and pressing it. You already know where the reset button is located in an electric heater. So, here are the detailed instructions on resetting your Rheem electric water heater:
Step 01: Turn Off The Power
You may think that the power to the heater needs to be on when you press the reset button. But then, you’d be wrong. It’s important that you turn off the power to the heater to ensure your safety. Turning off the power to the heater will also make sure that the reset button will work properly.
You’ll have to locate the circuit breaker that supplies power to the water heater and flip it off. Once you do that, the power supply to the heater will be cut off and you can move on to the next step.
If you’re having difficulty locating the right breaker, check the labels on the left-hand side. Keep in mind that the breaker of the heater is a two-pole breaker. Hopefully, that’ll help you find the right breaker quickly.
Note: Sometimes, you may face an issue that the breaker that powers the heater will keep on tripping. If that sounds familiar, check out my Rheem tripping breaker solutions guide to learn how you can fix this issue.
Step 02: Access The Reset Button
The reset button is located inside the upper element access cover in all the electric water heaters. Rheem water heaters are no different. Remove the screws holding the access cover in place and take off the cover.
Set the screws and make sure you don’t lose them. You’d be needing them later when you put the heater back together. Then, remove the insulation. In most Rheem water heaters, the insulation will be made from fiberglass.
You can just pull the insulation and set it aside. Once you do that, you’d have eyes on the reset button surrounded by a white plastic cover. It’ll be red. It’s next to impossible to miss it.
Step 03: Press The Reset Button
There’s no need to remove the plastic cover. When you have found the reset button, all you have to do is to press it. Just push the reset button inward and you should hear a clicking sound. The sound indicates that the heater has been reset.
If you don’t hear the clicking sound, it means the ECO wasn’t tripped. If you’re not getting any hot water, it’s likely due to another issue. I’ll talk about why the reset button may not work in the next section in detail. Scroll down to that section if you’re facing this problem.
Step 04: Put The Heater Back Together
If you hear the clicking sound, you’ve successfully reset the unit. So, it’s time for you to put the heater back together. Start by placing the insulation back into its original position.
Then, you can put the access cover back in place and tighten it with the screws. Finally, turn the circuit breaker to the “On” position to restore the power supply to the water heater.
Step 05: Test The Water
Once you turn the power to the heater back on, it’ll start working again. It may take up to a couple of hours for the water to get to your desired temperature. Then, you can enjoy the hot water from your water heater.
It’s not a big deal if the ECO gets tripped once in a while and you reset the heater. But if the ECO keeps getting tripped and you constantly need to reset the unit, there’s a serious underlying issue.
Remember that the ECO is a safety device and it gets tripped for a reason at the end of the day. I also have a dedicated section on the main causes of why the ECO keeps tripping along with their fixes. So, keep on reading.
Why Is Rheem Electric Water Heater Reset Button Not Working?
The most common reason why the reset button doesn’t work is because the ECO wasn’t tripped in the first place. Remember that the reset button is only useful when the ECO gets tripped to restore the power to the heater. But if the ECO doesn’t get tripped, the reset button won’t work.
You’ll know when the reset button doesn’t engage as you won’t hear the clicking sound. You’re most likely tinkering with the reset button because you’re not getting enough hot water from your heater.
But you need to keep in mind that there are plenty of other issues that could cause that problem. Lucky for you – I have a dedicated guide on this topic. Check out my Rheem electric water heater not heating hot water fixes guide to learn how you can solve this issue.
Another common reason why the reset button may not work is if the button itself is faulty. You’d have to replace the malfunctioning button with a new one to solve the issue here. But the bad news is that you won’t find the button as a separate component. You’d have to replace the entire upper thermostat.
Why Does Rheem Electric Water Heater Reset Button Keep Tripping?
One of the most annoying issues you could face with your electric heater is if the ECO keeps on tripping. You need to fix that issue immediately if you want to use your heater without any hiccups.
There are many potential culprits behind this issue. Let’s look at the most common ones along with their solutions.
01. Thermostat Issues
The first thing you have to watch out for here is if you’ve set the thermostat too high. Generally, the ECO trips when the water temperature goes beyond 180 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’ve set it too high, you need to dial it down.
Secondly, there’s always the possibility that you have a defective thermostat. If you have a bad thermostat, it won’t stop the heating element from heating the water when the desired temperature is reached.
So, the heating element will continue to heat the water until the water becomes too hot. Eventually, the ECO will get tripped. You need to test and replace the thermostat if you suspect that the thermostat could be the culprit.
You already got the link to my guide on how to fix the Rheem electric heater not heating water in a previous section. Visit it and scroll down to the section on the thermostat to find out how you can test and replace it in detail.
02. Shorted Heating Element
During normal operation of the water heater, the heating element stops heating the water when the set temperature is reached. But when you have a shorted heating element, it’ll continue to heat the water even after that.
The end result will be that the water will get exceedingly hot and the ECO will get tripped. It’ll keep on tripping until you find the faulty heating element and replace it.
First, you’d have to test whether you really have a bad heating element or not. There are two heating elements in electric water heaters. So, you’d have to test both of them.
If any of them turn out to be defective, you’d have to replace them. Check out my guide on why does Rheem heater keeps turning off with solutions for detailed instructions on how to test and replace the heating element.
03. Wiring Or Electrical Issues
The wiring of the water heater needs to be perfect if the heater is to be operated without any issues. If any of the wiring connections are loose or the wires are corroded, a lot can go wrong with your heater.
The ECO could trip in that scenario and can keep on tripping even after resetting the heater. You’d have to find the faulty wiring and fix it if you want to solve the issue. It’s too complicated of a task for a DIYer. So, you should consult a qualified technician for this job.
There could also be issues with the electrical supply. Power surges or frequent storms can make the circuit breaker trip and the ECO could also trip with that.
If you can wither the storm, you can avoid using the heater for a while.
But if it’s due to power surges, call your utility company and see what’s up. There’s not much you can do in that situation. You’ll have to leave it to them to fix the issue as soon as possible.
04. Leaking Water
Water leaks are also a potential culprit that could lead to a tripped ECO. When water is leaking, it can throw off the reading of the thermostat. Even short water draws can keep the thermostat from working properly.
So, the issue will be worse when there’s leaking water. You’d have to identify the source of the leak and take corrective actions to solve this issue.
There are a few common points that are generally responsible for water leaks. Check out my guide on Rheem leaking water and fixes to find out more about them in detail.
05. Damaged Reset Button
The thermostats and heating elements are often the common culprits behind electrical water heater issues. You should have tested both of them by now. If all of them are working properly and pass their tests, there’s a chance that the reset button itself is damaged.
If the reset button is faulty, you’d have to replace the entire upper thermostat. Unfortunately, those buttons aren’t sold as a single unit and they’re a part of the thermostat. So, you’d have to replace it on a whim if you suspect a faulty button could be the issue.
Why Your Rheem Water Heater Needs To Reset & How To Troubleshoot A Rheem Hot Water Heater
How To Reset Rheem Water Heater [Gas Tank Style Units]
The reset procedure of a gas water heater is a lot different than an electric water heater. I’ll talk about all the things you need to know about resetting a Rheem gas water heater in this section.
You’d want to reset the gas control thermostat if an error code pops up on your heater. Lucky for you – the process of doing it is incredibly easy. So, how to reset the Rheem water heater thermostat?
First, you’ll have to turn off the gas supply and the power supply. Then, you’ll have to restore them and turn the gas control knob seven times. If you’re confused at this stage, keep reading for detailed instructions.
Where Is The Rheem Gas Water Heater Reset Button?
There’s usually a reset button embedded into the upper thermostat in electric water heaters. You may expect that there would also be a similar button for a Rheem gas water heater.
I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there’s no such reset button in gas water heaters. So, don’t sweat it anymore trying to find the Rheem gas water heater reset button location. That button doesn’t exist.
But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to reset Rheem gas water heaters. Depending on the gas control valve in your heater, you could be able to reset the heater. Keep on reading to learn more about it.
How To Reset Rheem Water Heater With Thermostat [3 Easy Steps]
Whether you can reset the gas control thermostat depends on its type. If your Honeywell gas control valve blinks blue when showing error codes, you can reset it. Here’s an example of how such gas control valves look:
But there are many other gas valves on which you won’t have a specific reset procedure. You’ll have to restart the gas water heaters to do the reset in those heaters. How can you do that?
Turn the gas control knob to the off position. Cut off the gas supply entirely and wait for a while. Then, you can restore the gas supply and restart the heater. It’s the oldest method of resetting your gas water heater.
With that said, let’s look into how you can reset the gas control valves I mentioned earlier. You’ll need a flathead screwdriver to reset the gas control thermostat. Once you have that, follow these steps to do it:
Step 01: Turn The Gas & Power Supply Off
Turn off the gas control valve by flipping the switch to the “Off” position. Unplug the heater from its power source as well. So, both the gas and electrical connection of the heater would be turned off.

Step 02: Restore The Gas & Power Supply
Wait for at least one minute and turn the electrical power to the water heater back on by plugging the heater again. Then, you’d have to turn the gas control valve on by turning the switch.
Step 03: Rotate The Gas Control Knob Seven Times
It’s important that you do the next set of actions within a total of 30 seconds. So, brace yourself and be prepared for quick action. Grab the flathead screwdriver and keep it in hand before you begin. Turn the gas control knob to the “Low” position at first. Now, you can start.
You’d have to go back and forth seven times. So, you’d turn the gas control thermostat from “Low” to “High” to complete 1 cycle. Then, you’ll go from “High” to “Low” to complete one more cycle. Keep going in that manner until you reach seven times total.
When you do that, the gas control valve should be reset. If the status light was previously flashing due to an error code, it should go away by now. You can be sure that you’ve successfully reset the heater if it happens to you.
Then, you can move the gas control knob to your desired temperature. You should hear the main burner ignite if everything is okay with your heater. You’ll be able to enjoy a warm shower soon if the reset works properly.
How To Reset Rheem Gas Water Heaters With White Rodgers Gas Control Valves?
I’ve already talked about how you can reset the Rheem water heaters that have a Honeywell gas valve. But there are also Rheem gas heater models that are equipped with a White Rodgers gas control valve. Here’s what it looks like:
The good news is that you can also reset those gas control thermostats easily. However, the process of resetting it is different than the Honeywell one. Follow these steps to do it:
- Unplug the water heater from its power cord and leave it that away for a minute. Then, reconnect the power supply of the heater.
- Press both the arrow keys on the gas control valve together and hold them together until the green light on the left side starts to blink.
- Then, you have to press the arrow buttons following this sequence: Left, Right, Left, Left, Right, Left, Right, Right.
- All the LED lights will light up when you do so and indicate that the reset procedure has been completed.
That’s how you can easily reset the White Rodgers gas valve. Then, you can set the heater to your desired temperature and enjoy the hot water.
Why Should You Reset Your Gas Water Heater?
The main reason why you’d reset your gas water heater is when you see an error code pop up. You’ll know if an error code has come up due to the flashing pattern of the status light in the gas control valve.
Resetting the water heater will erase the error code if it comes up due to a glitch. Here’s a quick look at some common error codes:
2 Flashes – It indicates issues with the flue damper. Check out my Rheem 2 flashes error code guide to learn how you can solve this problem.
3 Flashes – This code also represents issues with the flue damper. Luckily, I have a guide on it too. Check out my guide on the Rheem water heater 3 flashes error code to learn how you can erase this error code.
6 3 Flashes – The status light will flash 6 times and then 3 times when this error code comes up. The most likely culprit here is pilot assembly or gas supply issues. Visit my Rheem 6 3 flashes guide to learn more about it.
7 Flashes – When you see the status light flashing seven times, it’s normally due to the presence of flammable vapors. However, the FVS could also get faulty and cause this issue. Check out my guide on resetting the flammable vapor sensor to solve this problem.
8 1 Flashes – This code also comes up for issues with the FVS. But the gas control valve can also be faulty here. Visit my Rheem 8 1 flashes error code guide to learn how you can clear this error code.
Besides clearing out error codes, it may also be necessary to reset the gas heater after replacing a component. For example, if you got an error code for the flammable vapor sensor and you replaced it, you’d have to reset the heater.
Otherwise, the error code will remain. It’ll only go away once you reset the heater and also solve the underlying problem. Otherwise, the error code can come back again. That’s why it’s so important to reset the water heater.
What To Do If Resetting The Gas Heater Doesn’t Work?
Hopefully, resetting the heater works out for you. But sometimes, there could be other issues with your heater. For example, you could also have a faulty gas control valve. If that’s the case with your heater, resetting it won’t do the trick.
You’d have to replace the gas control valve if it turns out to be bad. But it’s a critical component and you should check it to conclude that it’s actually defective. Don’t rely on guesswork here. Check out my Rheem gas control valve guide to learn about testing and replacing it in detail.
Similarly, there could be other faulty components in your heater. If you’re seeing an error code, it’ll point you in the right direction. You’ll have to replace the malfunctioning part and then, reset the heater to remove the error code.
Only resetting the heater without replacing the bad part won’t work. Luckily, I have a dedicated guide on Rheem water heater error codes for you. Check it out to learn about all the status light flashing codes and their fixes in detail.

Many people also look for the Rheem RTEX 13 reset button. But as it’s a tankless water heater, you won’t find any reset button in it. But don’t worry! Still, here I’m going to suggest some effective procedures to reset the unit. Keep on reading to get the details:
Resetting Rheem Tankless Water Heater [Two Methods To Know]
There are two methods to choose if you want to reset your Rheem tankless water heater. One is reset through the circuit breaker where the heater is powering up. Another one is the hard reset that will be done by the dip switches, located on the control board of the heater inside.
Go through the below lines to get details about reset procedures:
Method: 1 Reset Through the Circuit Breaker
Almost all tankless water heaters that use line voltage require a dedicated circuit with a circuit breaker to power itself. In the case of the Rheem tankless water heater, it needs up to 120 volts AC, 60 Hz circuit with single-pole 3-amp circuit breaker.
Anyway, you can reset your tankless water heater for both gas and electric models through this circuit breaker line. Here is all that you need to do:
Step 01: Turn Off The Water Supply
As for the first step, you need to turn off the water supply to your water heater. For instance, turn off the water shut-off valve for your water heater.
Then, locate all the hot water fixtures and turn them to the off position. When you are sure about no water supply to your water heater, head to the next step.
Step 02: Unplug Your Water Heater
At this step, turn off the electric supply to your water heater. Certainly, your heater is connected with a properly grounded electrical outlet through a plug-and-play power-up system.
Even though you have a gas tankless model, it requires electricity in order to run and regulate.
Here you just need to unplug the power cord from the connection to stop the electric supply to the unit.
Step 03: Flip The Circuit Breaker Off
Now at this point, you need to disconnect your water heater from the main power line. For instance, head to the circuit panel of your house and locate the dedicated breaker switch for your Rheem tankless water heater.
Once you have found it, simply flip the breaker to the “Off” position.
Let the heater reset for about 5-10 minutes after that time, flip the switch to the “ON” position. Your water heater is being reset now.
Precautions:
While working with the circuit breaker, take all the needed safety precautions. Like wear safety glasses or if possible protective gear to prevent a slight possibility of an arc flash hazard spark spilling out to your body. Also, stand to the side of the breaker box and your head to the side.
If you haven’t dealt with the circuit breaker before, I highly recommend not to touch it by yourself. Ask the help of any professional to do so.
Step 04: Turn On The Power & Water supply
When all is done, plug your tankless water heater back into an electrical outlet. Plug in the power cord and press the power cord on the remote controller to turn on your water heater. Then, open the water shut-off valves to start the heating process.
Step 05: Test The Water Heater
Finally, test your tankless water heater to ensure that it is working properly. Turn on the hot water faucets and let the water heater run for a few minutes. Now check the temperature of the water to make sure that it is hot enough.

First off, make sure all the Dip Switches are in the “Off” position. That means all that would be to the downside.
Now locate Dip1 – Switch #2. Turn it on and immediately turn it to the Off position.
Right then, locate MIN and MAX just below the dip switch assembly. Press and hold both buttons at the same time within 5 seconds of pressing the Dip Switch 2. Keep holding both buttons for about 2 seconds.
Right after that, the remote control will flash “UL”, indicating that the heater has been reset. Release the buttons.
Step 04: Reassemble Your Rheem Tankless Water
When the reset is done, simply put the front cover back in place and screw it snugly. Plug the heater back into the power connection and press the power button on the remote controller. Your tankless water heater should run efficiently.
