If there is no error code on the Rheem control display, it means that the water is correctly flowing through the heater, but there is no hot water. You will get the temperature setting displayed on the screen.
There may be several reasons why water would flow through the system, but water is not heated. Such as:
- The unit isn’t plugged in
- Low water flow
- Plumbing crossover
- Blocked water inlet filter or malfunctioning water flow sensor
How To Fix:
Start by inspecting the power supply to your water heater. Make sure the unit is plugged in correctly. Check for a tripped or turned-off circuit breaker and reset it.
Now verify the minimum water flow rate of the system is met according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If not, check for blockages in the water inlet filter and clean it.
Also, ensure the water flow sensor is in correct working order and there are no crossed water lines in your home plumbing system.
Error Code P1
Rheem tankless water heater error code P1 indicates low water flow in the system. Unlike other tankless water heaters, the Rheem water heater requires a minimum flow rate of up to 0.4 GPM for the main burner ignition.
In case the system detects a low water rate going through the unit, it triggers the error code P1 on the control display. While dealing with the same error code in my Rheem model, I’ve found that my tankless water heater keeps turning off.
Anyway, the major reasons for a sudden reduction in the water flow in a tankless unit include:
- Plumbing crossover
- Blocked water inlet filter
- Bad water flow sensor
- Setting the temperature too high
- Clogged faucet aerators or blockage in the water supply line
How To Fix:
Start by resetting your Rheem tankless water heater. For instance, turn off the power supply to your water heater. Also, turn off all hot water fixtures running for your water heater.
Let the unit reset for up to 10-20 seconds, and then turn the water and power supply back on. Hope that the error code is erased.
If not, inspect the water inlet filter for stubborn grime and particles. Clean it properly.

Error Code 1L
Rheem tankless water heater error code 1L reflects a possible scale build-up in the heat exchanger. As I am living in a hard water heater, it’s quite a common factor for me to build up mineral deposits in the heater elements.
In this case, I always need to be highly concerned about the proper maintenance of my water heater.
Also, you need to be regular in draining and flushing your water heater to remove the mineral deposits and to turn the heater at peak efficiency at all times.

Error Code 03
Rheem tankless water heater error code 03 signifies some malfunctions with the manifold control. It mainly occurs on units with MIC-180 or EZLink.
How To Fix:
First up, unplug the water heater from the power connection. Unscrew the front cover and locate the dip switch setting on the control board. Make sure the Dip switch 4 is in the ON position.
Besides, verify the MIC-180 and the EZLink links are installed correctly. Replace the communications cables if necessary.
Error Code 05
Rheem tankless water heater error code 5 is a diagnostic alarm about the problem in the combustion process of the system. The best chances are the air intake or exhaust vents are partially blocked.
In case of imperfect combustion of your tankless system, a clogged air inlet filter is one of the big culprits to blame.
How To Fix:
Start by inspecting the air inlet filter for blockages. Remove the stuck grime and particles from the filter screen.
Now inspect the air intake or exhaust vents and clean them properly to ensure fluent airflow in the unit. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the stuck debris from the vents.
Error Code 10
Rheem tankless water heater error code 10 is found when there is a significant decrease in the ventilation of the system. For instance, clogged blower motor is one of the root culprits of this issue.
Besides this, blockage in the air intake and exhaust venting can also be responsible for restricting fresh air entering the unit.
How To Fix:
To troubleshoot the Rheem error code 10, inspect the blower motor to see whether it is in good working condition. Clean it first and then verify the wiring harness to the motor for damaged and/or loose connections. If needed, inspect the Molex connector of the motor connected to the PCB.

Error Code 11
If your Rheem tankless water heater beeps 11, be sure it is the error indication that the unit is running through without ignition. This can happen due to several factors. Like:
- Insufficient gas supply
- Dirty or defective ignition coil
- Clogged flame rods or main burner
- Blocked or incorrect vent installation
- Or faulty PCB
How To fix:
As there is no ignition, you need to find out any issues with the gas supply to the system. Make sure you are using the right type of fuel for your unit. The gas should run thoroughly, or if needed, refill the propane tank. Also, remove any obstruction from the gas supply lines.
Next, head to the vents and clean them properly. Plus, ensure the venting is installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then, look for a spark in the ignition coil.
Verify a good ground connection of the igniter or replace it if necessary. Besides all these, you need to check the flame rod, main burner, gas control valve, or PCB in sequence, as any of them can be responsible for this error code.

Error Code 12
Rheem tankless water heater code 12 on the remote display is indicating flame failure in the system. Several factors are contributing to this factor when there is no flame in the tankless unit.

Error Code 13
Rheem tankless water heater error code 13 is a clear sign of incomplete combustion in the system. It can happen due to a dirty or broken flame sensor.
Other major reasons include:
- Clogged or incorrect ventilation
- Non-functional blower motor
- Wrong altitude settings
- Poor or no ground connection.
- Interruption in gas supply
How To Fix:
First off, inspect the air intake and exhaust venting, as chances are it is blocked by debris. Clean them properly. Next, remove the front cover and locate the blower motor.
Here, you need to ensure the proper voltage to the blower motor. If necessary, clean the blower assembly.
Next, verify the flame rod as well, whether it is in good working order. Remove the carbon buildup on the sensor rod or, if necessary, replace the damaged one.
Besides, if you install your tankless water heater above 3,280 ft. and fail to set up the DIP switch, it may also trigger the Rheem error code 13. For instance, access to the PCB and adjust the DIP switch for the high altitude setting.

Error Code 14
Rheem tankless water heater error code 14 means the overheat limiter has failed, and the water heater has stopped heating due to overheating. In the high-efficiency condensing model, the error code tells you about a tripped high-limit switch to rising temperature.
It can occur due to insufficient airflow or scaled or defective heat exchanger of the unit.
On the other hand, in the event of this fault code on your Rheem mid-efficiency model, interruption in gas supply, faulty Molex connection, and defective control board are also highly responsible.
How To Fix:
First off, ensure you’re using the right type of fuel for your unit. Also, check for blocked or obstructed airflow, faulty or damaged heat exchanger. Remove any deposits, foreign objects, or dust buildup in the combustion chamber and exhausts.
Next, locate the U Molex connector of the PCB to see whether it is installed correctly. If needed, remove it and plug it back in.

Error Code 15
Rheem tankless water heater error code 15 is an alarming sign of the boiling safety device. The best possibility is the heat exchanger temperature has reached 207 F degrees for more than 15 seconds.
At 210°F, the system will automatically shut down and may turn back on when the temperature goes down to 194°F.
In case the unit reaches 230°F, you will find the error code 15 showing again on the control display.
However, lime or scale build-up on the heat exchanger is one of the root culprits for why the element gets overheated. Otherwise, the thermistor is faulty and fails to regulate the heat exchanger temperature.
If that is not the case, the best chances are the water inlet valve is partially closed or has restrictions in the water inlet pipes.

When the Rheem error code 15 triggers, you’ll need to descale and flush your Rheem tankless unit following the correct instructions. Next, inspect the heat exchanger thermistor for any damage. Replace it if needed.
Last but not least, make sure the water inlet valve is open, and there is no obstruction in the cold water inlet pipe.
Error Code 16
Rheem tankless water heater code 16 is the error signaling the user about the condition of an overheated system. That means the outlet water temperature Is above the remote thermostat setting.
Various factors can contribute when the temperature of a tankless unit is rising uninterruptedly. There may have been:
- Clogged heat exchanger
- Restrictions in airflow
- Bad gas valve
- Bad heat exchanger thermistor
How To Fix:
First off, inspect the vent terminal and exhaust venting and ensure the airflow is not restricted or blocked. If so, clean out the venting properly. Next, Check the heat exchanger for the mineral deposits or scale build-up. You need to descale and flush out your unit to remove the deposits effectively.
While doing so, don’t miss to check the condition of the heat exchanger thermistor and gas valve.
Measure the hot outlet thermistor resistance readings, and if needed, replace the bad thermistor. But as with the right reading, the defective PCB would be the culprit, which you need to replace as early as possible.
Error Code 24
Rheem tankless water heater error code 24 defines the malfunction of the operational switch.
How To Fix:
To troubleshoot the Rheem error code 24, first up, turn off the power supply to your water heater. Turn off the water supply as well and disconnect the remote control. Now, check if the unit is operating without the remote control.
Next, inspect the grounding connection of the unit and ensure it is in good working condition. If needed, you will have to hard reset your Rheem tankless water heater through the MIN and MAX buttons on the PCB.
Avoid opening the hot water tap whenever you’re dealing with the MIN and MAX buttons.

Error Code 29
Rheem tankless water heater code 29 in the mid-efficiency model is the error indication of the too-low temperature from the heat exchanger. In case you have a high-efficiency condensing model, the error indicates an abnormality with the neutralizer water level electrode.
Either the neutralizer is clogged, or the condensate drain line isn’t correctly routed.
How To Fix:
If the error code 29 is found in your Rheem mid-efficiency water heater, inspect the heat exchanger for any blockage. Clean off any buildups in the heat exchanger fins. Then, measure the resistance readings of the heat exchanger.
If the reading is off, replace the bad heat exchanger. Or, you may need to replace the PCB if the readings are within specs.
Now, in case Rheem’s high-efficiency tankless water heater displays the error code 29, head to the neutralizer for any clogs. If so, remove the shipping cap from the bottom and drain some water through the neutralizer to clean the clog.
As with this, inspect the drain pipe as well for any solid objects. Take a stick and pock the drain line to dislodge the debris. Also, check for unnecessary P traps in the drain line. Finally, ensure that the drainage line is routed correctly.

Error Code 31
Rheem tankless water heater code 31 tells the user about the problem in the water inlet thermistor. The best chances are the inlet thermistor is clogged up by the scale build-up or damaged at all.
How to Fix:
After turning off the power supply to the water heater, remove the front access panel and locate the inlet thermistor. First off, clean the build-up scale from the thermistor.
Next, measure the resistance reading of the thermistor wiring connection to the control board. For instance, locate the connector R on the PCB and Measure the resistance between the thermistor and connection according to the instructions in the Rheem manual.
If the continuity across all wires is okay, replace the control board. But in case the reading is off, you’ll need to Replace the wiring harness for Connector “R” on the Control Board or replace the thermistor itself.
Error Code 32
Rheem tankless water heater error code 32 defines malfunction in the heat exchanger thermistor. It will occur when the thermistor is blocked by the soot or scale build-up. Besides, bad or damaged wiring connections or defective thermistor can also be responsible for this issue.
How To Fix:
While troubleshooting the Rheem error code 32, check the heat exchanger thermistor according to the maintenance information. If there is no information, inspect the heat exchanger thermistor and take the resistance reading across the wiring connection of the thermistor Molex.
If the reading is not correct, replace the bad thermistor. In case the reading is within the specifications, you may have to replace the PCB.
Error Code 33
Rheem tankless water heater error code 33 signifies a problem with the outlet thermistor. It might be blocked by scale build-up. Or, you may have a damaged or bad wiring connection or a short circuit to the thermistor. Bad PCB can also be responsible for this issue.
How To Fix:
First, verify whether the maintenance information is displaying the hot water outlet temperatures. If yes, the unit is operating correctly. If not, prepare to measure the resistance of the outlet thermistor.
Inspect the Molex connector “R” on the Control Board and check the resistance reading across the wiring connections.
Head to the Rheem manual for better assistance. If the continuity across all wires is okay, be sure the PCB is bad, and you need to replace it. Otherwise, replace the defective outlet thermistor with the help of a professional or contact Rheem customer service.
Error Code 34
Rheem Tankless water heater error code 34 indicates a problem with the ambient combustion air thermistor. This mainly occurs when the thermistor is plugged up by the scale build-up.
Besides this, damaged thermistor wiring, obstructions at the vent terminal, and defective blower fan blades could also result in an error code 34.
How To Fix:
Start by inspecting the ambient thermistor for any scale build-up and clean it properly. Inspect the thermistor wiring for any damage and fix it if you find any loose connections. Even this is the right time when you should check the resistance reading across the thermistor wiring to the PCB.
For instance, inspect the wiring connection of the Molex connector R and take the different Ohm readings. Match those with the instructions in the Rheem manual.
If the resistance to the Ambient Thermistor is OK, be sure the PCB is bad and needs quick replacement. Otherwise, replace the bad wiring harness for Connector “R” on the Control Board.
When done, check for airflow restrictions surrounding the unit.
Clean all the blockage from the air intake or exhaust vents. Then, inspect the blower motor assembly and ensure the fan blade is tightly fitted to the motor shaft. It should spin freely without any restrictions.
Error Code 51
Rheem tankless water heater error code 51 could be found when there is any malfunction with the gas control valve. The best chances are you have a bad wiring harness to the gas control valve, which is why it has stopped working.
How To Fix:
Check the Gas Control Valve wiring harness for loose or damaged terminals. If needed, remove the connection and reinsert it again. Now check for Ohm reading to the wiring terminal of the gas control valve. If needed, replace the bad valve.
Error Code 52
Rheem tankless water heater error code 52 defines you about the problem with the PGFR Valve. Bad wiring harness to the valve is one of the root culprits to blame for this issue.
How To Fix:
Inspect the wiring harness to the PGFR Valve and look for any loose connection. If so, fix it. If necessary, replace the PCB or bad PGRF valve
Error Code 61
Rheem tankless water heater error code 61 signals a problem with the blower motor. That means the fan motor isn’t speedy enough to continue the combustion process in the system.
Either the blower assembly is clogged with dust, or it’s not getting the right voltage from the PC board to let it turn on.
How To Fix:
Without considering anything else, inspect the root culprit blower motor first. Ensure it is turning on freely. If not, chances are the motor bearings are locked up due to accumulated dirt and debris in the fan shaft.
For instance, take a hose-attached vacuum cleaner and clean out the debris between the fan motor and housing. Next, check for loose or damaged wiring connection to the fan motor.

Error Code 65
Rheem tankless water heater code 65 is the error information from the controller indicating you about the malfunctioning water control valve. A loose or bad wiring harness to the water control valve could cause this error.
How To Fix:
Whenever the Rheem error code 65 triggers, inspect the wiring harness to the control valve for any loose connections. Reseat the loose wiring. Next, check for proper voltage to the water control valve and replace the valve if you find a malfunction in the element.
Error Code 66
Rheem tankless water heater error code 66 is an alarming sign of the problem with the water bypass valve. A damaged wiring connection to the water bypass valve is the leading culprit for triggering this error code.

Check for loose or damaged wiring connection to the water bypass valve. Tighten the loose connection or replace the bad wiring harness. Also, Check for proper voltage to water bypass solenoid and replace the bad PCB if necessary.

Rheem tankless water heater code 71 is the error sign of the malfunctioning gas inlet solenoid valve. The best chances are the gas inlet solenoid valve is not installed correctly if there is a bad wiring harness to the valve.
How To Fix:
Check gas inlet solenoid inlet valve wiring harness for loose or damaged terminals. Fix or replace the bad wiring harness. Plus, check for proper voltage to the valve assembly and replace it if necessary.
Error Code 72
Rheem tankless water heater error code 72 indicates that the flame rods are detecting false flame in the system.
This may happen if the flame rods are obstructed with the soot or dirt build-up.
Also, when a false flame is detected, it could also mean that the burner is not working properly. The higher possibility is that the burner chamber is clogged with foreign materials and dust, leading to this error code.
How To Fix:
First off, inspect the flame sensor rod and ensure it is touching the flame. If not, turn off the unit and check for obstruction in the sensor rods. Take a steel wool and run the sensor to remove the soot build-up.
Next, check for loose or damaged wiring harness or the sensor. For instance, measure the voltage reading for the wiring harness and replace it if necessary. Next, head to the burner chamber for foreign debris or dust. Clean the chamber properly.
Error Code 76
Rheem tankless water heater code 76 is the error indication of the communication fault between the system and the remote controller.
A bad wiring connection between the water heater and the remote controller is the root culprit here. That’s the factor, your Rheem remote controller may not get the right power to operate.
Besides all these, the defective PCB or the bad remote control itself is the major source of this issue.
How To Fix:
Locate the remote Control wiring terminal at the bottom of the unit and remove it from the connection.
Now, try to run the unit without any remote controller. If the unit works, replace the bad wiring.

Error Code 79
Rheem tankless water heater code 79 is the error indicating a problem with the current of the fan motor. It can occur from condensation or moisture accumulation on the fan motor. Besides, a loose or damaged wiring connection to the fan motor can also be responsible for this error code.

Inspect the fan motor for any water damage. First up, clean it properly, and it should run freely. Next, head to the Molex wiring connection of the blower motor to the PCB and test the voltage reading. If you find any malfunction, replace the fan or PCB if necessary.
Error Code 80 & 81
Both error codes 80 and 81 on the Rheem tankless water heater mean gas cut-off or extinction failure of the system.
How To Fix:
Inspect the flame rod and gas valve wiring for any defection. Make sure both are installed correctly and working as they should. If needed, test the element through the voltage reading and replace the faulty elements.
Error Code 82
Rheem error code 82 on the remote display indicates that the control board isn’t programmed properly. It can occur if the program chip of the PCB isn’t installed correctly or damaged at all.
How To Fix:
Inspect the program chip on the board to see whether it is installed correctly. Also, check the altitude you are using is suitable for your tankless unit. If needed, restart the unit and adjust the DIP switches on the PCB for the high altitude setting. If still, the error code persists, replace the bad PCB.
Error Code 90
Rheem tankless water heater error code 90 indicates a blocked flue. Blockage in the heat exchanger, blower motor, air intake, or exhaust flue are the root culprits that trigger the Rheem error code 90.
Besides all these, the higher possibility is that the vertical and horizontal vent lengths do not meet the safety standards.
How to Fix:
First off, inspect the heat exchanger flapper for any blockage and clean it properly. Clean the clog from the blower assembly as well and make sure it is in well working order. Next, inspect the air intake and exhaust flue as well and remove the accumulated dust from there.

Error Code 92 & 93
Rheem error codes 92 & 93 are the diagnostic information from the controller, signaling you that the Neutralizer needs to be replaced. Both codes are quite common in the high-efficiency condensing models.
How To Fix:
To diminish the Rheem tankless error codes 92 & 93, you will have to replace the neutralizer with a new and well-working one.
Error Code 99
Rheem tankless water heater error code 99 signals that the fan motor isn’t creating enough ventilation to operate the unit. The possible reasons for triggering this error code include:
